How Johnny Became the Best Voice Over Talent in the World

voice talent:

Once upon a time when he was just a boy, Johnny dreamt about being just the person that did voices for well-known funny cartoon characters.

This was his dream and the dream came true over the years.

I am going to fill you in on some of the most important steps that Johnny  took to help you succeed in your dream.

  • Have a voice that people wanted to hear. So reproduce all of the different sounds you could make to come up with something great. Yes you can even change the pitch of your voice if you want to. The vocal cords and your voice ID will not change, but by articulating differently, moving all the organs that participate in voicing, you would be surprise of the result. So start this exercise by imitating a character. This leads me into my next step.
  • Be interesting. You can’t be boring and expect to be a great voice over talent. Use your imagination and get creative. Your voice has so many dimensions and you are probably not aware of. Possibilities that an average person has never experimented with. So do this. Experiment.
  • You need to train. Yes, I said train. Practice makes perfect and if you are all breathy while trying to audition, you will not get hired. Try moving around your home while practicing to help with that. Improve your lung capacity by doing sports, swimming or cycling are the best for that.
  • Read out loud. This step is so important. I don’t care what it is, a flyer, a business card or the back of a cleaning bottle. Read it out loud; make it sound interesting and not breathy. Do this for at least one hour a day. If you can have someone listening to you, that’s perfect. If not, just record yourself, use your smartphone or laptop and then listen to you and compare the stress, rhythm and intonation with what you hear from a voice talent.

So after many months of doing all these steps and not skipping one of them you have mastered the above steps and you hink we are ready to move on? Alright, then let’s start acting. What? You don’t want to act, you just want to talk? Too bad, they come hand in hand.

  • Put all of yourself into your voice. Have fun and be imaginative. This will help in all future voice over jobs. A trained voice that sounds interesting is not enough, you have to put some feelings and emotions for instance smile while you read.

This advice is pretty straight forward: listen to announcers in both radio and television. Be aware of any voice over that comes to you, how the talent said the lines. The voices you are hearing are experienced and you could learn a lot just by picking up on their clues in their speaking. Practice, practice, practice.

Alright, so you have made it this far and you still want to pursue this voice over thing? Great, that is what I was hoping for. This step is critical.

  • Direct yourself – be your biggest critic before you ever practice in front of another live human being. Be so critical that it is annoying. Even if you need to record yourself and play it back. Critique the crap out of it. Make it perfect, well, almost perfect, um well, no, you better just make it perfect.

These are the steps Johnny followed and earned him quite some name today and some big money too. Johnny forgot to tell me that he had so much fun and had been able to perform some amazing voice over including dubbing famous cartoon characters.

He started when he was young, but it isn’t necessary. However old you are now it doesn’t matter. If this is your dream, then just do it. Get started and make it happen. Some people need training for years and some just need a week or two. If you got it, you got it.

But consider this: becoming a voice talent is not just having a nice voice, but first and foremost being capable of using to the full the capacity of this formidable instrument. As simple as that.

Sharing this information with all of you was very important. There is room for so much talent in this industry and I wanted to start helping people follow their dream before I am too old to do it.

I’m sure you have some other useful tips to help out those who are starting. Please leave your suggestions here below.
